More on Speech and Language Disorders…

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder where the brain has trouble coordinating the movements needed for clear, consistent speech. A child with CAS might know what they want to say, but their words can come out jumbled or unclear. This can make everyday communication frustrating and limit social and learning opportunities.

Getting treatment early is important. With targeted speech therapy at Bluebird, many children improve their clarity and confidence, making it easier for them to connect with others and succeed in school.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

Childhood Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) affects how the brain interprets sounds, especially speech. Children with APD may hear well but struggle to understand spoken language, particularly in noisy environments or when instructions are complex.

Speech therapy can help by strengthening listening, memory, and language skills, giving children tools to better process and respond to what they hear. Early support from Bluebird can improve communication, learning, and confidence in everyday situations.

Speech Sound Disorder (SSD)

Speech Sound Disorders (SSDs) occur when a child has trouble saying certain sounds correctly, making their speech hard to understand. This can include substituting one sound for another, leaving out sounds, or saying them in the wrong way. While some speech mistakes are normal in young children, persistent issues may signal an underlying disorder.

Getting help early can prevent these challenges from affecting a child’s communication, confidence, and learning. Speech therapy can significantly improve clarity, helping children express themselves more easily and engage fully with others.

Expressive and Receptive Language Disorder

Mixed Expressive and Receptive Language Disorder makes it hard for children to understand language and express themselves clearly. They may struggle to follow directions, answer questions, or put their thoughts into words, which can affect learning and social interaction.

Early support is key. With language therapy, children can strengthen these skills and communicate more confidently at home, in school, and with peers.

Fluency Disorders

Fluency disorders, such as stuttering, affect the flow and rhythm of speech. Children may repeat sounds or words, stretch out sounds, or have blocks where no sound comes out at all. This can make speaking frustrating and may lead to anxiety or avoidance of talking.

Early treatment can help children speak more smoothly and confidently. With the right support from Bluebird Speech Therapy, they can develop effective communication skills and feel more comfortable expressing themselves.

Reading and Literacy Disorders

Reading and literacy disorders often involve difficulties with phonological awareness—the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in words—which is a key area addressed in speech therapy. Children may struggle to decode words, spell, or understand what they read, even if they’re bright and eager to learn.

Speech-language therapy with Bluebird targets the underlying language skills that support reading, such as sound-letter connections, vocabulary, and comprehension. Early intervention can help children become more confident readers and set the stage for long-term academic success.

What are the signs of a “late talker”?

A late talker is a toddler (typically between 18–30 months) who has a limited spoken vocabulary for their age but shows typical development in other areas like play, motor skills, and understanding language. Signs may include using fewer than 50 words by age 2, not combining words into simple phrases, or seeming frustrated when trying to communicate. If you're concerned, Bluebird Speech Therapy can help determine if support is needed and get your child on the path to confident communication.

Does your child need extra social skills support?

Social Communication (Pragmatic) Disorders affect a child’s ability to use language appropriately in social situations. This can include trouble with things like taking turns in conversation, understanding tone or body language, or knowing how to adjust speech based on who they're talking to. Children may have difficulty making friends or struggle with group interactions.

These challenges can exist on their own or be part of a broader diagnosis, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, or language disorders. Bluebird Speech Therapy is happy to help build the social language skills your child needs to connect with others, navigate everyday interactions, and thrive socially and emotionally.
